Two-Time World Cup Medallist, GB Mens' Team Captain, World Championships Medallist,

Great Britain 2012 Wheelchair Sabre Champion

2012 First Day Olympic Torchbearer

Following a spinal injury, Matthew has competed in Wheelchair Fencing for Great Britain and Captained both the Men's Sabre team and the Men's Epee team at World Cups.

His highest individual ranking of 4th came at the World Cup in Hungary in 2013, but he successfully captained the mens Sabre Team to Bronze at the World Cup in Germany in 2014, as well as being part of the Bronze winning team in 2013.

A serious shoulder injury during the Paralympic Qualifiers in 2015 meant that Matthew was unable to continue to pursue his dream of competing at the Rio Paralympics and he was forced to take a temporary break, returning in time to begin th qualifications for Tokyo2020 in early October 2018.

On his shoulder injury Matthew said "I'm absolutely gutted to have had to pull out at this stage. It's been a great few years and it's so disappointing to be dropping out at this stage. I feel particularly bad for all those that have helped me on the way, especially my coaches and the staff and fencers at Truro Fencing Club, as well as the many many people that have helped me through fundraising and support. I have no doubt my teammates will continue to fly the flag at competition and I look forward to watching them dominate at Rio!"

Following the postponement of Tokyo 2020 Matthew has taken the difficult decision to retire from Wheelchair Fencing: "I love fencing so much and the competition circuit is immense, but the reality is I am one of only a handful internationals competing at a high level whilst also working full time, and I now wish to prioritise my other work which is not only fulfilling but equally exciting. In particular I am working on launching a charity for children entering emergency foster care, which I really excited about, so 'watch this space'!"

A small gallery of some of his favourite moments from his years competing can be found below.
